Me and Filichia…

Peter Filichia at the Theatre World Awards 2006 (courtesy broadwayworld.com)
Theatre Editor for Star-Ledger and 4-time Nominating President and Chairman of the Drama Desk, Peter Filichia recently exchanged e-mails and articles about the likelihood of profit-theatre company success in New York that went down thus: (1) I sent him a press release and called him, (2)  He wrote a column for Theatremania.com “Out Goes Company.” in which he damned and criticized our production prior to seeing it; (2) I wrote “Peter Filichia has a Problem with Eastwind,” in which I corrected him on several inaccuracies in his article and challenged him to be a stand-up guy and come see the play before he rushes to judgement; (3) Filichia responded, raising a few objections with my response; (4) I published and responded to these objections in my article, “Peter Filichia’s a Stand-Up Guy“, conceding his points; (5) Filichia came out to Monkey Trick, bought me breakfast at a mid-town diner later that week, interviewed me, and wrote another theatremania column entitled “Saville’s Row with Me.”  As for the play Filichia writes, “Not bad, not bad at all…”

One man’s poison is another man’s meat: “ARTFUCKERS” & “MONKEY TRICK”

This time last year David Marcus was starring in a gritty, downtown play written by Michael Domtrovich, directed by Eduardo Machado called Artfuckers at Theatre for The New City. I went to this show twice, entertained both times. I went to the show primarily because I had worked with Dave on Williamsburg and several plays, but also because I had seen a reading of the play during the Summer of the previous year at Intar Studios and was impressed by Domitrovich’s writing. I should mention that the production also included the very capable actors: Nicole LaLiberte, Jessica Kaye, and Tuomas Hiltunen. The only incapable actor in the cast was Asher Grodman.

The show at Theatre For The New City was a success and got funding… From none other than Asher Grodman’s parents.

It is currently running Off-Broadway at the DR2. It opened the same week as Monkey Trick.

The funny thing is in the casting. We began casting for Monkey Trick in early December: Anne Fidler and Penny Bittone already cast as the roles of Wendy and Wilson respectively. Garrett was the trick… We cast the part once, had an actor drop out; held a casting, cast it again, and felt better about our decision even though time was running out.
